Seawolves in the Pros: Tom Koehler

Hot off the success of my discussion with Nick Abel, I turned to recent Marlins draftee and current Jamestown Jammers pitcher Tom Koehler, recent Stony Brook graduate, for a quick Q&A as well.

Chris D'Orso: Why did you choose Stony Brook?
Tom Koehler: Its location - close to home and the city, a chance to play winning baseball and get a great education while doing so.

CD: I know it's only been a few months, but what do you miss most about your time here?
TK: The family environment, but I still have the friends for a lifetime.

CD: Are there any faculty members of advisors who you really liked?
TK: Professor Lebovics and Professor Nutter of the History department, and Lauren Brown, my advisor.

CD: What guidance would you give an incoming first-year student here at Stony Brook?
TK: Sit back and enjoy the experience. Enjoy meeting new people and be open-minded to new things.

CD: Gary Novakowski signed with Kansas City this summer... are there any other former teammates who are playing professionally that you're still in contact with?
TK: Jon Lewis & Nick Abel, but mostly Gary. We're great friends.

CD: What was it like pitching in the College World Series? You took a tough loss against Arizona State.
TK: It was awesome being there, but I wish things went differently. We had our chances, but just made too many mistakes.

CD: Silly question... but do you have your first baseball card yet?
TK: Yes I do! Just got it.

CD: What are your future plans, either in or out of baseball?
TK: Making it to the majors! Then either teaching or coaching.

Thanks for the time, Tom!
